Celtic
Script is a formal hand dating from around the 3rd/4th century
and is often associates with highly illuminated manuscripts such
as the Book of Kells. There are many forms of Celtic
script and the letters are very adaptable, as can be seen in the
detail bottom left, and suitable for ornamentation and
decoration, particularly with celtic patterns and motifs.
The script is always vertical and is written with a broad
nib. The letters, unlike Gothic script are quite circular
which I think gives a nice texture to the script. |

Celtic Script is very rich and suits
elaborate and complex decoration in the form of knotwork, spiral
and keywork borders and panels, illumination of capital letters
and other complex design forms rendered in opulent gold leaf and
deep gouache colours. In particular Celtic script is
wonderful for designing monograms of couples intials as shown in
the example bottom right. Celtic borders are very
versatile and can be as complex or as simple as you wish to take
the time to create. The borders can also be split and
joined to form intricate patterns and panels.
