Gothic Script

Gothic (often known as Olde English) is a formal hand dating from around the 12th/13th century.  The script is always vertical and is characterised by serifs at the top and foot of the letters.  The script is written with a broad nib and the letter forms are narrow with respect to their height giving text written in Gothic Script a dense texture as shown in the example to the left.

As many medieval documents are testament to, Gothic script is enhanced with highly illuminated letters and rich decorative borders and panels as shown in the examples below.  Naturally, Gothic script is highly suitable for weddings that are set in medieval manor houses and castles.  The script can be difficult to read, particularly at a distance, because of its dense texture and this makes it less suitable for seating plans for weddings of more than 150 people.
